Study tips for Russian

  • Learn the Cyrillic alphabet first; most letters map to a single, predictable sound, which makes new words much easier to read.
  • Russian nouns and adjectives change endings by gender and case, so learn each new word together with its gender (masculine, feminine or neuter).
  • Russian word stress is not fixed, so always learn where the stress falls, shown in capitals in the pronunciation guide, since it changes how vowels sound.
  • Group vocabulary by topic and review it with spaced repetition flashcards rather than trying to memorize one long list at once.
  • Practice reading words aloud slowly before speeding up, since an unstressed letter o is usually pronounced like a short a in Russian.

Frequently asked questions

How many Russian words does a beginner need to know?

Around 100 to 150 core words covering greetings, numbers, family and food give beginners enough vocabulary to build simple sentences and start basic conversations.

What is a good way to test my Russian vocabulary?

Cover the English translation column and try to recall each Russian word aloud, then check your answer and repeat any words you missed until you can recall them without hesitation.

Is Russian vocabulary hard for English speakers to learn?

Some Russian words resemble other European languages, but the Cyrillic alphabet, changing word endings and unpredictable stress mean vocabulary usually takes longer to memorize than in a Latin-script language.
